About the Principal

 Ms. Elsa Martinez is a proud graduate of Zapata High School. Upon graduation she attended Laredo Junior College before transferring to Texas A & M International University where in 1993, she earned a Bachelor’s Degree of Interdisciplinary Studies with a Specialization in Reading. Ms. Martinez was immediately hired with the United ISD District as a Second Grade teacher at United DD Hachar in Rio Bravo, TX where she continued her education and earned her Certificate in Bilingual/ESL Education (Grades 1-12). At the completion of the school year, Ms. Martinez joined the staff at Zapata High School. Her passion for working with the youth of Zapata prompted her to become involved in all aspects of the school which included coaching various athletic sports as well as drama and the dance team. In 2005, Ms. Martinez received her Master of Science degree with a major in Educational Administration. Her certifications include Elementary Self-contained (Grades 1-8), Elementary Reading (Grades 1-8), Secondary English (Grades 6-12), Secondary Reading (Grades 6-12), Secondary Speech Communications (Grades6-12), and Principal (Grades EC-12). Her career has consisted of 12 years as a classroom teacher, 2 years as an assistant principal at the secondary level and 6 years as an assistant principal at the elementary level. She is currently the Principal for Zapata Middle School where she continues her passion to “inspire and develop learners to become the leaders of tomorrow.”
